Police say two victims reported in Frederick shooting; suspect is ‘down’

Maryland active shooter investigation: At least 2 injured, 'suspect down,' police say

Two people are in critical condition after a shooting on Tuesday near a USA military base in Frederick, Maryland.

Officials responded about 8:20 a.m.to the initial shooting scene at Riverside Technical Park in Frederick, about 52 miles northwest of Washington, police said Tuesday.

"One of the victims who was wounded entered our facility looking for help and we were able to assist and call the authorities", said Mutschler, who is based in NY.

Both were flown to the Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore, Lando said, adding that "at this time, the last update we have is that both of our victims are in critical condition".

The shooting was in the northeast of the city, about a 4-mile drive east of the US Army's Fort Detrick, according to police. Fort Detrick police confronted him.

"It wasn't that long after he came through the gate" that the shooter was stopped, Hill said.

Frederick Mayor Michael O'Connor said the base is a huge economic driver in the region, drawing scientists, military personnel and their families to the community.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story mistakenly identified Fort Detrick as a Naval base.

Mark Nelson, a firefighter who lives in a row of townhomes across the street from the base, said he heard the base blast warning sirens Tuesday morning. They said the suspect was "down".

"It's very tragic. It's happening too frequently".
