"I've known you for a pretty long time now", Fallon said to Hathaway. She doesn't want to be called "Anne" anymore!
"Call me Annie, everyone, everyone, call me Annie, please", she continued.
The actress said she'd rather be called Annie or anything else.
Hathaway's mother is the only one who calls her "Anne" and she only does it when she's mad, the 38-year-old said.
Anne Hathaway - excuse me, Annie Hathaway - will star alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor in the HBO Max film "Locked Down", debuting Thursday.
She made a decision to use the moniker when she was 14 years old filming a commercial, she told Fallon.
Hathaway also selected "99 Luftballons" as her best karaoke song and said that Leonardo DiCaprio and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam were her first celebrity crushes. It seemed like the right choice to me, but I never thought that for the rest of my life people would call me Anne.
But she didn't know at the time that her career would take off and that people would forever refer to her by her birth name and not her preferred nickname, Annie, she said.
She explained that Doug and Steven pulled it off by approaching Harrods with 40 pages and saying, 'We've got 40 pages and an idea but if you don't say yes to our needing to shoot the finale of the movie in your store, there's no point in us making it so, can we get a yes or no?' People are so lovely, they don't want to be presumptuous, and so they come up with workarounds on set because, the truth is, no one is comfortable calling me "Anne" ever. "People call me Miss H, people call me Hath, so feel free, call me anything but Anne". Some minutes, I'm like, 'Yes, absolutely, ' and some minutes the world scares me too much and I think I've got two healthy ones and that feels really great.
The Princess Diaries star also opened up about her two sons - Jonathan, four, and Jack, one - who she shares with husband Adam Shulman. "So 4 and 1, the ages are the ages that they are but there's a lot of magic in those ages", she shared. "Our 4-year-old believes everything we tell him, and that's adorable as well as very useful".
