Breaking: Conor McGregor signs contract, fight with Dustin Poirier set for January 23

Conor McGregor is to come out of retirement for a rematch with Dustin Poirier.

The fight, which Dana White has said will not be for a title, is likely to go down on "Fight island" in Abu Dhabi. Poirier has also signed up for the bout. UFC 257 on January 23 will bring the company back to "Fight Island" with a pay-per-view, and McGregor vs. Poirier will headline but will not be for any gold, per White.

According to a new report from The Mac Life, an MMA site owned by McGregor, the Irish MMA superstar has now signed his contract. The pair met in the featherweight division in 2014, with McGregor winning by first-round knockout.

McGregor, 32, has held UFC titles in the featherweight and lightweight divisions, but he has been at odds with the promotion since a TKO win over Donald Cerrone in UFC 246 on January 18.

"I am very grateful to be about to return and get to do what I love again", McGregor said in a recent interview.

'I look forward to the fresh test Dustin will bring since our first bout, while also showcasing my own incredibly deep cache of weaponry. The UFC has been hosting events exclusively at those two venues since late May. McGregor has competed eight times, where he captured the featherweight strap from Jose Aldo in 2015 and then the lightweight throne in 2016.

McGregor and Poirier both favour brawling, on-the-feet fighting styles that should provide a good matchup for McGregor's strengths.

Poirier (26-6) rebounded from that loss and fought his way to a UFC title, recording wins over Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez before outpointing Max Holloway for the interim UFC lightweight title in April 2019.

Conor McGregor continues to be one of the biggest draws in the UFC, even if he hasn't been as active as people would like him to be.
