Haaland wins Golden Boy award ahead of Ansu, Davies, Sancho

Haaland wins the 2020 Golden Boy award

"You never know what will happen" - Bundesliga star's father comments on links to 'proud' Man United

His performance in the last year has led him to be named Golden Boy 2020, an award that "Tuttosport" gives out each year to the best player under 21.

Haaland was the runaway victor with 302 points and leaves fans with a feeling of what could have been had he chosen to join United.

The former winners of the coveted trophy include the likes of Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi and Paul Pogba and the recent winners include Kylian Mbappé in 2017, Matthijs de Ligt in 2018 and Joao Felix in 2019.

Haaland is only 20 years old, but already earned a €20m transfer from RB Salzburg to Borussia Dortmund in January.

Haaland beat Barcelona teenager Ansu Fati and Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies who took second and third place respectively. He scored eight times as the Austrian side crashed out of the Champions League in the group stage.

The Norwegian scored a hat-trick on his Dortmund debut and went on to net 16 goals in all competitions throughout the rest of the season.

"If you play well, it's only logical that big clubs come knocking for you". At the moment it is not in my son or in my head that another club will compete for him.

"We signed a long contract with Dortmund and they have a fantastic team for Erling right now".

"You never know what will happen". We don't want to look any further. I think he would like to win some trophies with Dortmund. "Overseas is not a priority for us".

Some would argue a switch to Manchester United would be a step down at this point, with Dortmund competing for the Bundesliga title, regulars in the Champions League and, crucially, experts at developing young talent.

Haaland father: Sometimes I think he wants and can assert himself in all leagues. At the moment, he is happy in the Bundesliga and focused on Dortmund. He just wants to be a better player and doesn't look that far.
