Oops, says Emmy: 'This Is Us' actor gets award after mix-up

The mishap came during the award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, which was awarded to Ron Cephas Jones for his role in This Is Us.

Saturday's show, however, was the only one of the creative arts presentations to be televised, making the error more glaring. In a voice-over announcement, Bateman was declared the victor for his guest appearance on HBO's "The Outsider", while the screen displayed Jones' name.

The Wrap reports that a spokesperson for the Emmys issued a statement confirming that an "editing issue" had occurred and that Cephas Jones is definitely the victor, saying: "They announced the correct victor and it was the correct slate, but the voiceover was incorrect".

As the stars weren't actually in the room for the ceremony we didn't have a repeat of that now infamous 2017 Oscars mistake, which saw the cast and crew of La La Land having to leave the stage after they were mistakenly announced as the winners of Best Picture when the trophy was actually meant to be awarded to Moonlight. Ron Cephas Jones' name was again displayed, and the Television Academy also tweeted confirmation that he was the actual victor.

There was no immediate explanation for the mistake.

Ron Cephas Jones and Jasmine Cephas Jones Make History as First Father-Daughter Emmy Winners

Broadway vets Ron Cephas Jones and Jasmine Cephas Jones have become the first father-daughter duo in history to win Emmy Awards in the same year. Her honor was in the category of Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series. The broadcast version will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

But the Emmys misstep represented a cautionary note for Sunday's show, which also will be virtual because of the pandemic but has ambitious plans.

Jasmine Cephas Jones earned her first Emmy nomination - and win - this year, for her performance in the Quibi series #FreeRayshawn.

"When you think of a judge, when you think of all-knowing, when you think of powerful, when you think of all good, yeah, we modeled her robe after RBG, so that was pretty cool", Rudolph said.
