The NPD Group's monthly tracking of spending across the United States games industry is in for August, which spotlights another huge month for the market. Madden is the best-selling sports franchise in USA gaming history and has been the best-selling title in its release month for 21 consecutive years, so its strong performance this past month perhaps isn't too surprising. Between January and April in the us, the Nintendo Switch broke the all-time record for dollar sales.
This year, Nintendo has had a rather slow start in terms of software. The second best-selling game of the month is also a sports title; UFC 4 set a new franchise launch month sales record for an EA UFC game.
As it turns out, and despite this being a year in which the company has barely revealed any new games, the Nintendo Switch has set a new record in hardware dollar sales in USA history for the month of August; information shared by NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella. In the U.K., Switch hardware sales more than doubled in the first half of 2020 compared to the first six months of 2019. Pisccatella notes that it "has ranked among the top 7 best-sellers on Switch for 42 consecutive months". Switch unit sales were the highest for an individual platform in May since the Nintendo DS did so in May 2009. It's now the tenth best-selling game on Nintendo platforms in U.S. tracked industry history.
