University of MI among top public schools in latest U.S

Syracuse University and the University of Pittsburgh tied for No. 58 with the University of Washington and the University of Maryland, College Park. By design, the Best Value Schools rankings place significant emphasis on affordability for students who may be eligible for need-based aid.

St. Louis University ranked 103rd overall tied with eight other schools, coming in at 48th for schools with the best value and 68th among best colleges for veterans.

Earlier this summer, UM once again topped the list of top USA public universities, according to the QS World University Rankings for 2020-21.

"The University of MS has a long tradition of leading the state in academic excellence, nationally-competitive programs and life-changing learning experiences", Chancellor Glenn Boyce said. The private university also earned the No. 191 spot among schools with the best social mobility. Lindenwood University in St. Charles and William Woods University in Fulton each ranked between 298th and 389th.

Missouri schools ranked in the top 50 for regional Midwest universities include Truman State University in Kirksville at No. 7 and Rockhurst University in Kansas City at No. 13. McPherson College ranked 31st and Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina nabbed the No. 38 spot.

In August, The Princeton Review applauded St. Lawrence University for its outstanding academic and co-curricular offerings and the supportive faculty and staff who make it all possible in its most recent publication, Best 386 Colleges: 2021 Edition.

How are schools assessed and ranked? U.S. News gathers data from and about each school in up to 15 areas related to academic excellence.

U.S. News has ranked colleges and universities each year since 1985, and Johns Hopkins has been among the top 16 for 26 consecutive years.

Those include graduation and retention rates, social mobility, graduation rate performance, undergraduate academic reputation, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, average alumni giving rate and graduate indebtedness.

"For better or for worse, we do not factor nonacademic elements like social life and athletics", the rankings' authors wrote.

The U.S. News college rankings, however, have faced widespread criticism and scrutiny from leaders in higher education.
