NASA to Provide Coverage of Astronauts' Return from Space Station on SpaceX Commercial Crew Test Flight

NASA announces astronauts for SpaceX CREW-2 manned mission to the ISS

The successful flight marked the first commercial vehicle that carried a human crew into orbit and the first crewed launch that took place in America since the Space Shuttle Program was retired nearly a decade ago, forcing NASA to pay expensive fees for seats aboard flights operated by Rocosmos in the meantime.

The astronauts are a mix of astronauts from NASA and the space agency's worldwide partners.

Robert and Megan will join the crew as as spacecraft commander and pilot respectively, with Akihiko and Thomas fulfilling the role of mission specialists. A minimum of three crew members have to be constantly present on the ISS to ensure it is working.

Frenchman Thomas Pesquet was announced on Tuesday (28 July) as one of a four-person crew for next year's launch to the space station. Her mission will be the Crew Dragon's second in a series of at least six round-trips to and from the International Space Station (ISS).

Five individuals are as of now ready the ISS: Two Russian cosmonauts and NASA's Chris Cassidy, Douglas Hurley, and Behnken, The last two showed up at the space station in May in the wake of directing SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule on its historic journey. In just a few days, Behnken and Hurley are set to make the return trip to Earth. SpaceX's Crew-2 is being targetted for launch in spring 2021.

Crew Dragon will soon be departing in the ISS shortly, and NASA will be able to reevaluate it and utilize the hardware every time it requires. He first launched aboard space shuttle Endeavour for a visit to the station on the STS-126 mission in 2008, then aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft for Expedition 49/50 in 2016. In total, the retired Army colonel has spent 189 days in space and conducted six spacewalks.

Dr McArthur is an oceanographer who will be making her second voyage into space.

She previously flew in the space shuttle Atlantis on a mission to fix the Hubble Space Telescope.

The station is a critical testbed for NASA to understand and overcome the challenges of long-duration spaceflight. It was the spaceship's first crewed flight - the first time humans had ever flown in a commercial spacecraft. He has spent 140 days 17 hours 26 minutes in space.
