Masks will not be required for most outdoor locations, anyone under 2 years of age or people with breathing problems.

The mandate states that "every person working, living, visiting, or doing business in the City of St. Augustine shall wear a face covering in any indoor location, other than their home or residence, when not maintaining social distancing from other person (s), excluding family members or companions".

The new requirement is being enacted a little less than two months before the Republican National Convention is slated to be hosted in the Florida city.

The city's mayor, Lenny Curry, was not present at the news conference.

Jacksonville, Fla., which is hosting the celebratory parts of this summer's Republican National Convention, did an about-face on Monday and mandated the wearing of masks in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

"Please continue to practice personal responsibility to help stop the spread of this virus".

She said city leaders reached the decision to require masks after consulting local health officials and that penalties for noncompliance were under discussion.

The letter, signed by about 200 doctors, states that Florida is already considered a hot spot for the virus. The letter, which was delivered to Curry this past weekend, also urged officials to require masks.

"It is extremely unsafe and contrary to current public health recommendations to stage a large event in an area where the number of cases is surging". "The RNC should be postponed or very significantly reduced in numbers because of these risks". Previously, Conarck was an investigative reporter covering criminal justice at The Florida Times-Union. The U.S.is seeing a surge in confirmed cases, especially in the South and West, with about 40,000 per day.

White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany said the president's advice is to "do whatever your local jurisdiction requests of you".
