Pakistan broke its previous record of the highest single-day number of deaths ever from the novel coronavirus, reporting 97 fatalities during the past 24 hours that take the country's death toll to 1,935, the health ministry said. It added that the over 200,000 current coronavirus cases in India, a country of over 1.3 billion people, "look big but for a country of this size, it's still modest".

Iran, which has been gradually relaxing its lockdown since mid-April, has reported a sharp rise of new daily infections in recent days. While the death toll stood at 394,875, as many as 2,746,192 people have recovered so far.

At least 19 states now have their tallies of confirmed cases in four or more digits, as against just nine on May 1. Among the newer states to see a big surge, Odisha's tally has risen from less than 150 to over 2,600, Bihar has risen from 466 to almost 4,600, Haryana has grown from 357 to almost 3,600 and West Bengal has seen its numbers rise from 744 to more than 7,300. In terms of fatalities, the United Kingdom recorded the most number of COVID-19 deaths after the US.

The Latin American nation has now registered 35,026 total coronavirus deaths and 645,771 confirmed cases.

210 new cases in Andhra Pradesh, total cases now 4,460.

The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday capped the charges for COVID-19 treatment in private hospitals at Rs 15,000 per day in Intensive Care Units across the state and announced that no fee over and above the fixed slab can be claimed from patients.
