Jets bring in Joe Flacco as potential back up to Sam Darnold

The Broncos placed the 35-year-old Flacco on injured reserve in November after he suffered a herniated disk in his neck and they released him in March.

The Jets went 0-6 the past two years when Darnold missed starts, with Josh McCown going 0-3 in 2018, Trevor Siemian 0-1 last season and Luke Falk 0-2 last season. Denver released Flacco with a failed physical designation in March, and he is expected to be out until around September 1. Financial terms were not immediately disclosed, but ESPN reported the deal is worth $1.5 million and could reach $4.5 million with incentives. Douglas was a key member of the Ravens' personnel department who fought for Flacco during a draft process that eventually led to Baltimore taking Flacco with the 18th-overall pick, per NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah.

Last year, Flacco was traded to the Denver Broncos where he had a very weak season and found himself without a job. Flacco is far from the Super Bowl MVP he was back in 2013, but he might still have enough in the tank to help the Jets in a time of need.

Flacco has thrown for 40,067 yards with 218 touchdowns and 141 interceptions in 11 seasons. It's unclear if Flacco will be healthy in time for New York's season opener this fall.

"I'm probably a little bit more anxious about other things at this point", Flacco said on December 30.
