Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards thanked Brees for the support, tweeting, "On behalf of the Great State of Louisiana, we are all grateful for your family's support and generosity through this trying time". As Louisiana continues to become one of the nation's hotspots of our current predicament, Drew Brees has announced that he and his wife Brittany are donating $5 million to the state.
In his post, Brees pledged to work with several corporate sponsors to deliver more than 10,000 meals to those in need around the state "for as long as it takes". "Shoot, we've got politicians, athletes - you name it, they've caught it. Prince Charles caught it, right?" Some of the money will be used to help deliver 10,000 meals per day to children, seniors and families that have been impacted. The meals will feed children and families, as well as seniors.
In his first season with the Saints, Brees was named First-Team All-Pro and received the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award.
He's also led the National Football League in passing yards 7 times and in touchdown passes 4 times since his arrival in New Orleans. Arriving in New Orleans just months after Hurricane Katrina devastated the region in 2006, Brees has been a leader in relief efforts. "I know I can still play", he said during an interview on WWL Radio.
