First coronavirus death confirmed in Europe

An 80-year-old man has died of coronavirus in France, becoming the first fatality from the infection in Europe.

"I was informed yesterday night of the death of a Chinese tourist aged 80, who was hospitalised in Bichat Hospital, Paris, since 25 January", she said. "He died from a pulmonary infection from coronavirus".

It's understood she had been in France since January 16.

Two staff from Lewisham Hospital in south London are now in isolation at home after coming into contact with the woman.

The death was confirmed by the French health minister this morning, but no further details about the victim have been revealed.

Only three deaths had previously been reported outside mainland China - in Hong Kong, the Philippines and Japan.

The deceased woman's daughter has also been infected, Ms Buzyn said, but she is believed to be recovering. The epidemic has killed nearly 1,400 people.
