Though Trump defended his current personal attorney and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who also stepped up the controversial policy while governing the city, he said Bloomberg "came in and multiplied it times ten".
In a subsequent salvo Trump compared Bloomberg to his 2016 Republican nomination challenger Jeb Bush. But, like any debate, Bloomberg was ready for a scathing retort. "He reminds me of a tiny version of Jeb "Low Energy" Bush, but Jeb has more political skill and has treated the Black community much better than Mini!"
Bloomberg, soon after, returned fire on Twitter, in Trumpian terms.
"We know numerous same people in NY", he wrote.
"If you were a black person in NY, you were stopped two times a day, three times a day, you couldn't go to your house, they were stopping you every day", Trump told Geraldo Rivera during a lengthy interview on Thursday, adding "What Bloomberg did to the black community was a disgrace". "They know you inherited a fortune & squandered it with stupid deals and incompetence", he blisteringly wrote, before offering a final warning. "But you or I wouldn't be in that group". "And I will." The financial data businessman has spent at least $350m on his campaign to date and said he plans to spend up to $1bn on the race. He has a net worth of more than $55.5 billion, according to Forbes.
Bloomberg has smashed campaign spending records in an effort to win the nomination, and critics argue he is effectively trying to buy the USA presidency his vast fortune.
Two very mature men running for president.
In his response, Bloomberg accused the president of attacking him because of his "fear over the growing strength of my campaign". "But after hearing what Mike Bloomberg has to say - on gun safety, economic justice, equity, the environment, health care, the planet - I changed my mind".
Trump shortchanged all that in his tweet, cutting Bloomberg's height by several inches.
