The two were in a room at Bellaire High School with four other students but no adult Tuesday afternoon when the 16-year-old took a semi-automatic pistol out of his waistband and pulled the trigger, killing 19-year-old Cesar Cortes, said Lt. Greg Bartlett. She said the shooter brought the gun to school but could not say whether it was an ROTC weapon.
The district later issued a statement that Wednesday classes at the school were canceled.
The suspect remains at large and all students were told to leave the school, Fox 26 Houston reported. There have been conflicting media reports about whether the shooting happened inside or outside the school. Officials gave no update on the suspect's status later at a news conference.
The victim was rushed by ambulance to Ben Taub Hospital but later died.
Police are urging residents to avoid the area or stay inside their home until further notice. The school district confirmed the student's death.
This story has been corrected to reflect that the superintendent's last name is Lathan, not Latham.
