The Cowboys have been rather quiet about their assistant coaching moves since hiring Mike McCarthy.
So it was rather clear that Marinelli was not coming back to the staff, but now his name has surfaced in Oakland with head coach Jon Gruden. According to NFL.com's Jim Trotter, Gruden has dismissed defensive line coach Brentson Buckner after only one season.
Gruden reportedly told Buckner that his performance wasn't the reason for the firing. The Raiders' defensive front also seemed to improve under his tutelage in 2019.
Head coach Jon Gruden made the decision and replaced Buckner with veteran National Football League coach Rod Marinelli. As Trotter notes, the Raiders had 32 sacks under Buckner this season after tallying just 13 in 2018.
Marinelli has been with the Dallas Cowboys since 2014 as he was the team's defensive coordinator and defensive line coach.
The Cowboys allowed 103.5 rushing yards per game this season under Marinelli, which was 11th in the NFL. According to Slater, Marinelli was considering continuing to coach but had made no final decision.
Oakland finished 7-9 under Gruden this fall after going 4-12 in 2018.
