Issa Rae’s ‘Congratulations to those men’ quip sums up Oscars frustration

Isa Rae's congratulations on these men's joke sums up Oscar frustration

After reading the nominees, Rae, masterfully filled with shadow, added: "Congratulations to these men".

The commentary is timely, considering the Oscar's are, once again, being lambasted online for being so white and male.

Off the top of our heads, we're thinking of Little Women (Greta Gerwig), Hustlers (Lorene Scafaria), Booksmart (Olivia Wilde), The Farewell (Lulu Wang), A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (Marielle Heller), Honey Boy (Alma Har'el), and Harriet (Kasi Lemmons). The same issue was buzzed-about when it came to the Golden Globes earlier this month, as not one female director was nominated at that show, either. Still, Gerwig wasn't able to secure a directing nomination, despite becoming the fifth woman nominated for Best Director with a nod for Lady Bird in 2018.

For an award ceremony that seems to pride itself on relevancy, this year's nominations are frankly boring.

The Academy Awards air on February 9-tune in to see who takes home the trophies! Industry website Deadline called this year's nominations "basically #OscarsSoWhite Part 2: #OscarsSoWhiterAndWithMoreMen", referring to a hashtag begun in 2015 in response to the lack of diverse nominees. Presenter Issa Rae who gave out the Oscar 2020 nominations make a rather scathing remark congratulating "Those Men" post female directors snub.

Lina Wertmüller ("Seven Beauties"), Jane Campion ("The Piano"), Sofia Coppola ("Lost in Translation") and Kathryn Bigelow ("The Hurt Locker") were also nominated for best director. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science did not include any female director for this year's Oscars.

'Joker, ' a supervillian origin story starring Joaquin Phoenix, racked up 11 Academy Award nominations. The film was nominated for best picture, best adapted screenplay, and two acting awards (Saoirse Ronan for best lead actress and Florence Pugh for best supporting actress). "This film is a testament to the brilliance of Greta Gerwig".

Whilst Gerwig was once no longer nominated within the Best possible Director class, the "Little Ladies" filmmaker picked up a Best possible Tailored Screenplay nod, simply one in all six nominations for her retelling of the liked Lousia Would possibly Alcott novel of the similar identify.

Four out of the five directors nominated are white men, save for Joon-ho (whose nomination for directing a foreign language film is certainly a massive accomplishment).
