The White Sox were among the teams pursuing Wheeler. On Tuesday, it was reported that Wheeler received an offer worth more than $100 million.
At some point, you have to draw a line and I would draw the line at five years/$125M. His wife is from New Jersey and that is the reason he chose the Phillies according to sources. It is his choice.
We've already seen some big signings, including the White Sox inking Yasmani Grandal to a four-year deal. His average fastball velocity (91.4 mph) and strikeout rate (8.8 K/9, 24.1 percent) are both down a bit from peak levels, but Bumgarner still displayed impeccable command (1.9 BB/9) this past season and topped 30 starts for the first time since his injuring his shoulder in 2017's dirt-bike debacle.
There are two still indisputable truths about major league hitters, though.
December 4: The mid-day guys on Philadelphia's sports talk radio station WIP were discussing Zack Wheeler an hour or so before it was announced the Phillies had signed him, and the two co-hosts and their often on-air producer were, seemingly, doubled up with laughter. Now, it looks like the White Sox can allocate the remaining money owner Jerry Reinsdorf wants to spend on multiple pieces, and overpaying for Wheeler might have made Jerry stash his checkbook for the rest of the winter.
In five seasons with the Mets, Wheeler went 44-38 with a 3.77 ERA and 3.71 FIP. I wish they got Zack Wheeler, but the future is still bright on the South Side.
