"In addition to being probably the most titled individual sportsman of Switzerland, he is also the ideal ambassador for Switzerland", said the Mint. It will release a 20 Swiss francs silver commemorative coin in January next year.
"There is no other Swiss person in the world as well known as Roger Federer", it added.
Swissmint cited his 237 straight weeks at world No. 1 and his grand slam haul before mentioning his off-court charitable work, including his foundation. Having won 103 tour-level titles including 20 Grand Slam singles trophies and 28 ATP Masters 1000s, Federer is easily one of the most decorated players in tennis. "One could nearly lose count of his tennis records". Moreover, in 2006, he was named as the first Swiss national UNICEF goodwill ambassador.
The obverse side of the coins is designed by Artist Remo Mascherini, Flamatt, in the canton of Fribourg.
The image of the coins show an engraving of the 38-year-old hitting a backhand. The inscription of ROGER FEDERER is placed along the upper-right edge of the coin.
An "uncirculated quality" version of limited edition coin is already up for pre-order online while the proof-quality coins will be available from the issue date onward in January.
However, Federer fans will be able to purchase the coin before its official release through the Swissmint website.
The pre-sale of the coin began Monday and ends December 19 - or earlier if the first run of 55,000 units sell out.
A further 40,000 may also be produced next year depending on demand.
