The key point about the Snapdragon 765 is affordability: this platform is created to bring 5G to those who don't want to pay big money for the latest flagship devices. We can, however, be sure that 5G-enabled Snapdragon 765-powered phones won't really be affordable, to start with. It's very odd. Samsung can announce two Galaxy Note phones, a watch, ear buds, and a speaker in a single 1.5 hour keynote, yet Snapdragon talk takes 3 days. The poster also makes it clear that the smartphone will be 5G-ready.
These new brains, which are around half the size of a penny, will replace the current the 855 as the firm's flagship processor.
The Snapdragon 865 was one of the expected announcements from Qualcomm's annual Tech Summit, that's now underway in Maui, Hawaii. The Snapdragon 765/765G brings integrated 5G connectivity, advanced AI processing, and select Snapdragon Elite Gaming experiences. The Modem-RF system includes Qualcomm 5G PowerSave, Smart Transmit, Wideband Envelope Tracking and Signal Boost.
Interestingly, the Snapdragon 865 is being coupled with the Snapdragon X55 5G modem as a separate chip. Both will be 5G platforms, but focused on different segments and with different capabilities.
Qualcomm hasn't announced the design details - it's spending the first day of its Snapdragon Summit talking about how it will position its next-gen chips. The AI performance of Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 has reached 15 TOPS, which is twice the previous generation. Other perks includes Qualcomm apX Voice for super wide band voice over Bluetooth. This also means that the debut of Qualcomm Snapdragon 865's debut in Xiaomi handsets may by sometime in Q1 2020.
It would be a mistake to think of the Snapdragon 765 as a stripped-down version of its higher-tiered counterpart, though some features don't quite match what you'll get with the Snapdragon 865. Qualcomm says it should work with any key spectrum band, in any region. Qualcomm is also promising to bring "desktop features to mobile gaming", something we're hoping to hear more about during the week.
