Amazon Echo Input portable smart speaker launched at Rs 4,999

Amazon releases its first portable smart speaker in years, but you can't have it in the US yet

Amazon Launches First Battery-powered Portable Echo Speaker

Amazon today announced a new battery-powered version of its ubiquitous Echo speakers.

Perhaps the audio power is not particularly impressive, as the company only mentions "360 degree sound", not even going to the trouble of vaguely promoting a "crisp sound" experience or anything.

That means users will be able to pick-up and take the smart home gadget with them wherever they go. So, if you want Alexa with you in the living room to field queries about the actors you're watching on screen, or change the smart lighting in the room to match the mood - then you can carry the chatty box with you. "Portability has been one of the most requested features in India", said Amazon's Alexa devices VP Miriam Daniel, as reported by TechCrunch.

"Customers in India love Alexa, and told us that they want to carry their Echo device from room to room so that they can have an uninterrupted hands-free Alexa experience".

Just like other Alexa speakers, you can control your IoT home products with voice commands. As the name implies, the Echo Input, which debuted past year, allows individuals to extend their existing "dumb" speakers with the Amazon's Alexa voice assistant.

Amazon's Echo ecosystem is expanding at a rapid pace and the company wants to put its smart assistant, Alexa, into everything from cars to household appliances. Dubbed the Amazon Tap, the rechargeable smart speaker wasn't well received by customers and never rolled-out to the United Kingdom and Europe.

This is the first portable Echo from Amazon, but it's not the first portable speaker running Amazon's Alexa assistant - the Seattle-based bookseller has been beaten to the punch by other third-party manufacturers.

For those in the West, there are some third-party accessories created to bring portability to the Amazon Echo.

Though larger, because of the inbuilt battery, the Echo Input Portable is otherwise similar to the Echo Dot.

Amazon's new Echo Input Portable speaker comes with a 4,800mAh battery inside, which can offer up to 10 hours of continuous music playback and up to 11 hours of standby life, according to Amazon. You know that the device is fully charged when all the 4 LEDs turn off. Amazon's Echo Input Portable Smart Speaker Edition is available to order right now. Users can now purchase it at an introductory price of 4,999 Indian rupees ($70) and the device will begin shipping on December 18. The speaker is originally priced at ₹5,999.
