The Detroit Red Wings have secured a much needed backup goalie in Eric Comrie after completing a trade with the Coyotes that sent defenseman Vili Saarijarv to Arizona.
The Coyotes claimed Comrie off waivers from the Winnipeg Jets on October 1, but he did not play in a game with Arizona.
He is in the midst of his fifth pro season, holding a career 81-83-20 AHL record with a 2.88 goals-against average, .910 save percentage and eight shutouts.
Comrie had made five National Hockey League appearances with Winnipeg over three seasons, posting a 2-3-0 record, a 4.21 goals-against average and.870 save percentage. The Coyotes claimed him off waivers earlier this season.
Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard was injured during Wednesday's 6-0 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, and was subsequently placed on IR. The Red Wings haven't revealed how long Howard will be out, but he is not expected back soon.
I've always been a Saarijarvi fan but over the last several years it's become clear that he was not in the Red Wings' long-term plans.
