Qualcomm announced that smartphones based on the new Snapdragon 865 and 765/765G will be available in 2020.

Qualcomm's 2020 roadmap for 5G in mobile devices is, perhaps, a bit surprising. Both models supersede the Snapdragon 730 and 730G as more affordable, high-performance chipsets.

As a flagship chip, the Snapdragon 865 boasts Qualcomm's highest-performing hardware to date across a huge range of the chip's components. The Snapdragon 865 Mobile Platform includes the Snapdragon X55 Modem-RF System to offer 5G connectivity and performance for the next gen smartphones.

"In 2020 Q1, OPPO will launch its flagship product using the Snapdragon 865 Mobile Platform, together bringing a faster and superior 5G experience to users". As for the 765, well, it actually has integrated 5G, so it might be cheaper for non-flagship phones to connect to 5G. Qualcomm's 700-series chipsets target the upper end of the mid-tier market. But what devices will feature the latest and greatest Snapdragon chip?

Its flagship mobile chipset, the Snapdragon 865, will not ship with integrated 5G capabilities and will instead rely on an extern modem. The first of these handsets will likely be announced in Q1 2020 as well. Xiaomi has confirmed the Mi 10 will be among the first.

We'll have more reporting this week from the Snapdragon Summit, which has become a way to foreshadow how Android phones and always-on laptops will change in the next 12 months.
