Clues About the Big Watchmen Reveal Were There This Whole Time

Angela Tries To Save Her Family In Watchmen Season 1 Episode 8 Promo

'Watchmen' Sex Toy Contained A Major Doctor Manhattan Clue

1 episode of Watchmen, "An Almost Religious Awe", viewers learned that the mythical Dr. Manhattan has been on screen all this time, masquerading as Cal Abar (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), the husband of Regina King's Angela Abar. Yep.

"Considering episode seven's ending, it would appear we have some explaining to do", Lindelof told THR in typically understated fashion, before firing off a reassuring message to fans: "If I were watching the show, I'd be starting to panic that we can't possibly bring this all together in just two more episodes". Dr. Manhattan was at the top of the list, he said. The Seventh Kalvary wants Doctor Manhattan so they can steal his powers. Once we landed on Angela Abar as that center, the new rule became that any legacy characters we were using (Veidt, Laurie, and Hooded Justice) could only be used in service of Angela's story...she was the sun, everyone else needed to be orbiting around her. Based on its past (and all the tropes of Greco-Roman mythology), the answer was intuitive ... love.

It is only after she gets home that we realise that Cal is Dr Manhattan, but Angela knew it all this time. "Nearly from the jump". They tried to keep it as secretive as possible but it was "a hundred percent" part of why they chose Abdul-Mateen. The backstory reveals that the name for the Doctor Manhattan dildo is called Excalibur and was created by Dan Dreiberg, the second Nite Owl.

If you are yet to watch the episode, do not read further. Obviously, though, it doesn't dive into all the plot questions raised by the big reveal.

But will we be seeing any more of The Crimebusters, the group that included Rorschach, Silk Spectre, Doctor Manhattan, The Comedian? The relationship between Angela and Dr. Manhattan (born Jon Osterman), as well as his supposed residency on Mars, should be clarified, but the showrunner Damon Lindelof still gave a glimpse of the turn of The Hollywood Reporter. How much has that played into her masked heroism? And if Cal has truly reduced his power level to live as a normal man, then he might really be in jeopardy of losing his gifts and his life. How does the Seventh Cavalry plan to make its own Manhattan? We'll have more when all that goes down.
