Florida Congresswoman Kathy Castor, chair of the House select committee on climate, said the committee will put forward recommendations in March for a comprehensive climate change bill to bring USA emissions to net zero by 2050. "We now must deliver deeper cuts in emissions".

"We have a common challenge but with differentiated needs and urgencies, which we can only overcome if we work together", said Schmidt as her country took over the chairing of the meeting from Poland.

Polish Minister of Climate and COP24 President Michał Kurtyka handed over to Chile in Madrid on Monday the presidency of the United Nations climate summit, the position he held since the previous conference in Katowice, southern Poland, last December.

"This must be the start of a decisive year for climate ambition".

Ahead of the COP25 meeting, a coalition of 35 African countries met at Morocco's Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Benguerir, north of Marrakech, to discuss "smart climate" and sustainable agriculture.

The world must choose hope over surrender in the fight against climate change, United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres said on Monday, warning a summit in Madrid that governments risked sleepwalking past a point of no return.

"There has never been a more important time to listen to the science".

His appeal came after Chile's environment minister, Carolina Schmidt, said the December 2-13 meeting needs to lay the groundwork for moving toward carbon-neutral economies while being sensitive to the poorest and those most vulnerable to rising temperatures - something that policymakers have termed "just transition".

"But we also see clearly that the world's largest emitters are not pulling their weight".

The opening of the two weeks of talks, called COP25, was a more subdued affair than usual because the venue was forced to change a few weeks ago from Santiago in Chile after violence and political upheaval erupted.

This 25th annual worldwide summit on climate change has had a rocky start; last year, initial host country Brazil withdrew its offer to host the conference, then replacement host country Chile did the same in October of this year.

According to Reuters, Castor now says the committee will soon put forward recommendations for a comprehensive climate change bill to "bring us emissions to net zero by 2050".

Nevertheless, U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is leading impeachment proceedings against Trump in Washington, appeared at the talks on Monday with assurances that Congress was committed to ambitious climate action.

Of course, Pelosi, by saying, "we are still in it", is not specifically referencing the United States' forgone involvement in the Paris climate agreement, but rather Congress' involvement in climate change initiatives, in general.

A Rocha is calling on Christians to take drastic action "irrespective of what the governments are doing" to reduce emissions.
