Falcons sack Saints in stunning upset

Ryan and the Falcons are 1-7 and in the midst of a six-game losing streak as they begin NFC South play against the 7-1 Saints.

In the third quarter of the game, the powers to be at Mercedes-Benz Superdome made a decision to play highlights of Super Bowl LI where the Falcons lost a 28-3 lead to the Patriots.

Still, Saints quarterback Drew Brees pushed back against the notion that his team had put in low-energy practices or taken this opponent too lightly; he told John Hendrix of Canal Street Chronicles after the game, "Felt like we had good practices".

Atlanta's defense stunningly dominated New Orleans' normally stout offensive line. Before the bye, he missed a game for the first time since the 2009 season, when he was inactive for a loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Atlanta's defensive dominance came in the first game since coach Dan Quinn re-assigned assistant coach Raheem Morris from receivers to the secondary.

"He's ready", Quinn said. The completion was good for a 13-yard gain and a first down. That's despite getting running back Alvin Kamara and tight end Jared Cook back from injuries that had kept them out of New Orleans' previous two games.

There will be plenty of topics for Payton this week, beginning with their 12 penalties for 90 yards - including a costly roughing the punter in the fourth quarter.

Falcons: Running back Devonta Freeman left with a foot injury. Hooper limped off early in the fourth quarter after being tackled by Demario Davis. Safety Kemal Ishmael received treatment on the field in the final minutes but walked to the sideline.

Saints: Cornerback Marshon Lattimore left with a thigh injury and guard Andrus Peat left with an arm injury in the first half.
