There is a possibility that the Lions shut Stafford down for the rest of 2019. His absence leaves QB Jeff Driskel, who joined the Lions in mid-September, as today's starter. Before his injury, Stafford was maintaining career-highs in passer rating (106.0) and QBR (73.1) this season. He's been an alternate before and has been invited in other years, but it would be huge for the Lions to be able to get Stafford back in the game for his own confidence and his career if he can make it outright.

In order to keep his hot season going and set him up for later success, Stafford will have to play. It is generally considered week by week with back fractures. They play in Washington against the Redskins in Week 12, and Week 13 brings their annual Thanksgiving day game, this year at home against the Bears.

What is Matthew Stafford's injury?

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is in danger of missing an National Football League game. It dates back to the 2018 season, where he reportedly played through breaks - all while not missing a game.

Stafford also is dealing with a hip injury, according to NFL Media.

The Detroit Lions won't have Matthew Stafford as they try to win an important game against the Chicago Bears on the road. According to ESPN, the game was nearly lost at the Lions' house against the Chiefs in Week 4 due to back pain.

The next morning, Stafford evidently gave in to doctors' suggestions for further tests on his back. Considering the back injury is an ailment that has hindered him for the last two seasons, Detroit would be wise to play it with extreme caution.

Stafford (hip/back) is trending toward a game-time decision for Sunday's 1 p.m. ET kickoff against the Bears, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. According to ESPN, he almost missed the Lions' home game against the Chiefs in Week 4 due to the pain in his back.

Stafford has started 136 straight games.

"I'll be good to go", Stafford said Wednesday.
