As the Spartans prepared for their home opener against Binghamton, tragedy befell the Winston family.

Albion Chief of Public Safety Scott Kipp said Winston was struck by a westbound Amtrak Train at the Erie St. crossing in Albion at around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday night, November 9.

Zachary Winston, a younger brother of Michigan State star Cassius Winston, died Saturday night after he was struck by a train, Albion Chief of Public Safety Scott Kipp confirmed to ESPN on Sunday.

Zachary Winston was one of Cassius' two brothers on the Albion College basketball team.

Kipp said that the investigation did show the incident was intentional after talking to the engineer conducting the Amtrak train and doing follow up interviews. "We want all students to know they are not alone". And as families do in hard times, we must come together to mourn and to embrace one another. "Please keep the family close in your heart".

The Winston brothers have been a fixture around MSU since Cassius, now a senior, was being recruited by Tom Izzo. The sophomore was unable to suit up in Albion's exhibition against MSU due to an injury. "Obviously, he was dealing with some things he didn't put outward".

Amtrak was notified of the crash at 8:41 p.m.

A University of MI student was struck and killed by train, Friday evening, in Washtenaw County. "The train did resume service after a delay of four hours and 45 minutes". No other injuries were reported.
