It was the third time overall and first time since June 30 against Curacao that Pulisic wore the armband.

But while there won't be a lot of tactical or personnel lessons to be drawn from Friday night's game, the US did manage to stop a three-game winless run and restore a bit of the feelgood factor ahead of a much tougher challenge at Canada on Tuesday.

Okay, and here is that record-setting @WMcKennie hat trick in 40 seconds!

The United States men's national team opened up its CONCACAF Nations League participation with an easy 7-0 win over Cuba on Friday, as Weston McKennie scored the earliest hat trick in USMNT history.

"If I could have written the game up, it would have been exactly like this. Score early, score many goals early, and then cruise", USA coach Gregg Berhalter said. We're going to learn a lot about our group.

The first-half goalfest for the US continued in the 39th minute when a Morris shot ricoheted off Cuba's keeper and then a defender and found the back of the net and Josh Sargent finished off a swift counter by the Americans to give them a 6-0 lead at the break.

Pulisic converted a penalty kick in the 62nd minute, nonchalantly putting his shot in the center of the net for his 14th worldwide goal, then was expressionless.

Though even more program records were in sight, both players were subbed off at halftime with one eye on Tuesday's game at BMO Field in Toronto. The next match, against 75th-ranked Canada at Toronto on Tuesday, is important for the hosts as they try to climb in the Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings and earn a spot in the hexagonal that will determine the three direct berths of the North and Central American and Caribbean region for the 2022 World Cup.

The U.S. finished with 24 shots and 12 on goal while Cuba failed to force Brad Guzan to make even one save. The Americans are 11-1-1 against Cuba, winning 11 straight matchups for their longest victory streak against an opponent. "It's a continued process and it's part of the system we're playing".

"It was another opportunity to keep rehearsing some of the movements we've been working on in training all week".

Of the Canada match, Berhalter added: "These are the games that are going to help our team grow".

"Everything lines up for us to really test ourselves against Canada".

The U.S. got its seventh goal from a penalty kick just after the hour mark when Pulisic converted from the spot following a clear handball in the area by Cuba defender Dariel Morejon.

It was Morris, Cannon, and McKennie again in the 13th minute, with a slight variation.

McKennie put the hosts in front less than a minute into the contest off a low cross from Morris.
