Raheem Sterling is destined to be a global superstar like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, according to Jamie Carragher, who tipped the Manchester City winger to win the Ballon d'Or in the near future.
And Carragher, who played with Sterling at Liverpool, believes the 24-year-old is on course to become the best in the world once Messi and Ronaldo retire. The pair have amassed five Ballons d'Or each, dominating the last decade of football as they led fierce foes Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively.
Since his 31st birthday, the five-time Ballon d'Or victor has scored 38 goals in 37 games for his country compared to the 55 goals in 123 games prior.
"I was wrong. By the end of his career it will be obvious City bought him at a bargain price".
Before the victor was announced, Cristiano told onlookers that he would like to have dinner with Messi one day. We might not be friends because we've never shared a dressing room together, but I always see him at award shows and there's no problem.
Messi has missed the early weeks of the new season because of a calf injury suffered before Barca's pre-season tour to the United States.
The 32-year-old ruled himself out of Saturday's clash with Valencia and remains unsure whether he will be available for next week's Champions League date with Borussia Dortmund.
I don't know. The Ballon d'Or is odd, no one really knows who is the favourite. I will return when I feel I have fully recovered.
With that in mind, and with Ronaldo having suggested that he and Messi should meet up for lunch at some stage , an Argentine icon says he would be happy to spend time in the Portuguese's company.
Barca have struggled in their skipper's absence, winning one of their opening three LaLiga games.
