The girlfriend of Cleveland Browns defensive end Chris Smith was killed Wednesday morning in a auto accident, the National Football League team said in a statement. The NFL star and his girlfriend, Petara Cordero, 26, were driving on a Cleveland highway early Wednesday morning when his Lamborghini blew a tire and crashed into the median. Smith's girlfriend exited the vehicle on the passenger side and moments later was struck and killed by an oncoming auto. Smith's auto had blown a tire and the 26-year-old Cordero exited the vehicle when she was stuck by an oncoming auto driven by a woman who admitted to police she had been drinking.
Police said other the driver admitted drinking. No charges have been field and toxicology reports are pending.
Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam offered their condolences to Smith, who signed as a free agent with the team past year. Head coach Freddie Kitchens also visited Smith at his home.
"Our entire organization mourns with Chris, his family and the Cordero family".
The Browns will have counselors on site throughout the week to provide emotional support for players and staff.
To make this story even more tragic, Chris and Petara just welcomed a daughter, Haven Harris Smith, four weeks ago. Smith is in his second year with the Browns.
