To use it, customers can swipe a barcode from the Target app or provide their phone number at checkout. The program doesn't require a fee or a Target credit card. Included in Target Circle is a 1% earning on every Target purchase that can be redeemed later.

Target will also allowing members of Target Circle to vote where the company directs their "giving initiatives,".

Target's customer base is "at the center of everything we do" and management continues to look for new ways to give them "another reason to choose Target", Rick Gomez, chief marketing and digital officer, said in the press release.

Customers who already have a Target.com, Cartwheel or Target-branded RedCard account will automatically join the Target Circle reward plan in October.

Target is the latest retailer to revamp its loyalty program because retailers are recognizing that they need new perks to encourage them to keep returning.

As part of the nationwide rollout, Target's existing Cartwheel platform for coupons will become integrated into Target Circle. This is created to allow for "a more seamless, intuitive shopping experience", Target said.

Target Circle launched as a pilot in spring 2018 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Over the last 18 months, more than 2 million guests have enrolled in Target Circle, completing more than 14 million transactions, the company said.

Target is expanding its same-day delivery service Shipt to include all major product categories.
