Hearts have announced the signing of goalkeeper Joel Pereira on a season-long loan.

The 23-year-old was part of United's squad for their pre-season tour of Australia and Asia, featuring as a half-time substitute in the wins against Perth Glory and Leeds United.

With David de Gea, Sergio Romero and Lee Grant all ahead of him in the pecking order, it makes sense for the Portuguese prospect to look elsewhere for minutes to develop.

Subject to global clearance, the Portugal Under-21 worldwide will embark on his fifth spell away from Old Trafford.

The former Portugal Under-21 global has made three appearances for his parents club, making his debut in a 4-0 FA Cup win against Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford in 2017.

A Portugal U21 global, he has been loaned to Belenenses and Vitoria Setubal and spent the second half of last season at Kortrijk in Belgium. Despite his many loan moves, however, he is yet to make more than 10 appearances for a single side.

Pereira will be available for Friday's League Cup visit to Motherwell if clearance arrives in time.

The keeper will provide competition for places with Hearts' first-team stoppers Zdenek Zlamal and Colin Doyle.
