Ruan Pienaar: Veteran scrum-half makes Cheetahs switch

Cape Town - Springbok Ruan Pienaar has signed a two-year contract with the Cheetahs and will represent the franchise in the PRO14 competition.

The former Springbok scrum-half has signed a 2-year contract with the Bloemfontein outfit after spending the last two seasons playing Top 14 rugby with Montpellier.

Pienaar will now return back to the South African province from Montpellier which he joined in 2017 and brings in a lot of worldwide experience having featured in 88 Tests for the Springboks since his debut in 2006 and last played for them during the 2015 World Cup. "Ruan's experience in Guinness PRO14 will be valuable for the Toyota Cheetah as he represented the Irish side from Belfast in 141 matches between 2010 and 2017." a club statement read.

"Pienaar was again selected at scrum-half for the RaboDirect Pro12 Dream Team for the 2011/12 season and was also named captain of the side".

Pienaar's first season with Montpellier was an unqualified success, scoring 193 points and helping them to the Top 14 final where they were beaten by Castres.
