Vanderbilt Pitcher Throws First No-Hitter In Super Regional History

Vanderbilt's Ethan Paul makes a catch of a line drive during the first inning of the team's NCAA college baseball tournament super regional game against Duke on Saturday

Vanderbilt's Kumar Rocker, son of former Auburn star, no-hits Duke in Super Regional

Vanderbilt freshman Kumar Rocker pitched the first no-hitter in NCAA Super Regional history on Saturday night against Duke.

Per the Tennessean, Rocker was the No. 2-rated pitcher in the 2018 MLB Draft according to MLB.com, but he was set on attending Vanderbilt out of North Oconee High School in Bogart, Ga. The victor will advance to the College World Series.

The wait hasn't been easy, especially after losing the super regional on their field a year ago.

Perhaps the best moment of Rocker's performance came in the bottom of the seventh inning, when Rocker got the first two outs of the inning and then faced Duke infielder Chris Crabtree.

Game 3 is set for 2 p.m. Sunday, with the victor headed to the College World Series.

After getting blasted by Duke 18-5 in Game 1 of its Super Regional series in the NCAA Tournament, Vanderbilt was on the verge of being eliminated. You also can't have a better name than Kumar Rocker. "They have a team that can go to Omaha and win it". With the season on the line, the Commodores called upon a freshman pitcher, Kumar Rocker, to start Game 2 against the Blue Devils.

Martin led off with a home run to left-centerfield, giving Vandy a 1-0 lead.

With two out in the fifth, Ethan Paul singled, stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch by Jarvis. Pat DeMarco thought he had a 2-run home run to follow only to be robbed by Lux with a great catch at the wall. "Got past that inning, and I just kept rolling from there". They had never allowed this many runs in this round.

Erikson Nicols also had four RBIs, including a two-run single in the second for Duke. Michael Rothenberg added a solo homer in the fourth.

Kumar Rocker has put himself on the map with a spectacular performance for the record books on Saturday night in the NCAA Tournament against Duke. Rocker struck out the side in the ninth to finish off the first no-hitter in the NCAA Tournament since Florida's Jonathon Crawford shut out Bethune-Cookeman on June 1, 2012. Price, now with the Red Sox, noted Rocker was trying to keep the Commodores' season alive.

The Commodores (52-11) have lost five super regionals when dropping the opener. The previous mark had been 86 set in 1985. Rankin Woley drove in three runs in the Tigers' five-run eighth, and Edouard Julien hit a three-run homer in the ninth. They got three days off before opening the super regional.

"Whenever we got that one run, I was like 'All right".

The Blue Devils will play one more game on Sunday at 3 p.m., the victor of that game will win the Nashville Super Regional and earn a spot in the College World Series.
