Du Plessis insisted that the furore surrounding de Villiers' proposed return from global retirement has not been a factor in the team's disjointed display in the World Cup so far and instead he believes it could be the sort of issue that draws the squad closer together.

The washout saw each team taking a point, leaving West Indies fifth in the standings on three points after three matches.

Du Plessis was playing for Chennai Super Kings and de Villiers for Royal Challengers Bangalore. "You know we wanted to play a full game today".

Earlier, West Indies captain Jason Holder opted to field under heavy cloud cover and with a poor forecast. But we can't control the weather. "So as a team, we'll take the one point and move forward to the next week".

Darren Bravo came in for the West Indies to replace injured opener Evin Lewis.

South Africa have to start winning matches to maintain any hopes of making the semifinals.

"Hash is a class player". You need a bit of luck to go your way.

After dropping their first three matches, South Africa's backs were against the wall. "There is more pace and bounce in the wicket, and the nature of it is that you lose wickets", Du Plessis said.

He added: "The further the game goes, the closer to a t20 game, being two down already, the odds are heavily in their favour". When we play them, we want to play the same brand of cricket that we are playing, what we executed in the past couple of games.

South Africa must win their final five matches to qualify from the round-robin group stage however, with clashes against Afghanistan, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia still to come. "I'm sure next time most guys will be in that position and will make better decisions".

South Africa brought in batsman Markram for JP Duminy and left-arm seamer Beuran Hendricks, who replaced injured fast bowler Dale Steyn in the squad, made his first start of the tournament, coming in for Tabraiz Shamsi. "A lot of other things had gone on before that, of course", he said.

"And I do honestly believe that we have been very far away from that". We need to focus on our own performance and get that sorted out.

"We would have probably been happy with that (three points from three games) at the start of the tournament".
