The 1991 PGA Championship victor, who was allowed to use a motorized cart at Bethpage Black after receiving permission from the PGA's Americans With Disabilities Act committee, posted a 6-over 76 on Friday, for a 36-hole total of 11-over.
Daly drove up the side of hills and through long native grasses on a golf course that doesn't allow carts for regular play - nor is created to accommodate them, especially with the restrictions of spectator ropes. The Bethpage Black course in NY also doesn't have cart paths. And the PGA gave him some suggested routes, but Daly said he improvised in some instances.
Fans see Daly as the common man playing golf - smoking an occasional cigarette, drinking a diet soda and wearing a gaudy pair of white trousers covered with New York Yankees emblems and pennants.
"Let's go John, drive it straight!"
The PGA Championship is finally here, and there are a few outfits receiving significant buzz on social media.
Another one yelled: "It's your world, John. We're just living in it, baby!"
"You got a DUI on that thing?" others hollered. But Daly didn't smile.
Daly said it had been nearly embarrassing riding a cart at Bethpage Black, where he limped on his knee "the size of a softball" around the long and hilly course on Thursday. "I played good. It's a major championship".
"I know some grief has been given about it, and I keep my point of view to myself, but he's in pain", said Rich Beem, the 2002 PGA Championship victor, who played with Daly on Thursday.
The two-time major champion said he has applied to use a cart for this summer's British Open, held at Northern Ireland's Royal Portrush July 18-21.
It's no secret that Daly is more of an enigma than anyone else participating at Bethpage Black Course. "There is no way I can walk it, but I feel like I belong to play because I am a past champion". "I've always felt like I play better when I walk". "I don't want to ride all the time, but if I don't, I won't be able to finish. It's just that if I don't, I'm not going to be able to play".
Tiger Woods was not happy that Daly was allowed to compete as he said: 'I once walked with a broken leg, ' referring to his epic victory at the US Open in 2008, when he played with a fractured tibia and torn cruciate ligament.
The event's 1991 champion shot a 6-over 76 during Friday's second round to cap off an 11-over total, putting him well outside the projected cut line of 3-over when he walked off the course.
"They're going to find out through the PGA of America, they're going to work together", Daly said. I would probably get nine holes and that would be about it. "Trust me, if I could walk, I would walk", he claimed after his opening round.
