Madam Secretary is coming to an end.
CBS has revealed that the show's already announced sixth season will also be its last. It's one of two long-running CBS dramas ending with shortened seasons in 2019-20, with Criminal Minds returning for a fifteenth and final season at midseason.
The announcement was made by CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl during the network's upfront press briefing on Wednesday.
Madam Secretary currently runs on Sky Witness and NOW TV, and Thursday night's episode is the season five finale, where Elizabeth McCord is about to make some big news. Kahl said, "They're going to do 10 episodes in the fall and tie up the storyline".
"We're happy and excited to do that for Tea and the writers of the show and the audience", he said. It's hard when a show "just poofs and goes away.' We like to be able to do this and send the show off with a great deal of respect and celebration. Everyone appreciates when we are able to do that". The cast also includes Tim Daly, Sara Ramirez, Keith Carradine, Sebastian Arecelus, Patina Miller, Geoffrey Arend, Erich Bergen, Katherine Herzer, Wallis Currie-Wood, Evan Roae and Željko Ivanek.
Kept alive by its syndication and streaming deals, it was only a matter of time before CBS chose to put an end to "Madam Secretary".
