ABC's 'Fresh Off the Boat' won't recast Constance Wu after renewal drama

Constance Wu's 'Fresh Off the Boat' Renewal Rant — ABC Responds

"I love FOTB. I was temporarily upset yesterday not because I hate the show but bc its renewal meant I had to give up another project that I was really passionate about.

We love what she does on the show, and we love the show", Karey Burke, president of entertainment at ABC, told TVLine during an Upfronts press briefing.

Burke said she was not saying yes or no to the idea of Jimmy Kimmel hosting the Oscars in 2020, a real possibility given the fact Kimmel recently signed a three-year extension of his deal with the network.

Wu has apologized for what she called "insensitive" comments and said she loves the sitcom. "I did actually know that Constance had another opportunity [that], had Fresh Off The Boat not gone forward, she would have pursued". However, she said, "we never really considered not bringing back 'Fresh Off the Boat'". "It's just too strong for us", Burke shared referencing part of Wu's apology or rather explanation for her rage.

McNearney, who during the past 16 years worked her way up among the writers and producers on Kimmel's talk show (and along the way also married the host after years of working with him), talks more seriously about the impact their baby Billy's health plight had on the national conversation about health care, and why they made the decision to share it with the whole country. "The cast and crew is happy to have her back and we're thrilled to keep her with the show".

On Friday, the actress shocked fans when she said she was "so upset" that the show had been renewed, writing, among other tweets, "I'm literally crying. Ugh. F-". "F**k", Wu first wrote. And no, it's not what it's about.

"People "assumed" that that meant I don't love and enjoy FOTB".

The controversy began on May 10, when Wu posted angry tweets just a few minutes after Fresh Off the Boat was picked up for a sixth season.

"The thing that scares me [about ending 'Jimmy Kimmel Live"] is I don't know how I'll feel when I stop doing it... I love the cast&crew. But that won't have any effect on her future with the series.
