And in the new 2020 GLS 580, Benz's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 gets the same treatment. At the NY auto show this week, Mercedes followed that reveal up with the introduction of the ultra-hot GLC 63 and GLC 63 S Coupe. The electrical system includes an integrated starter-generator and powers many components.

This powertrain has interesting implications for future Mercedes products as well as upcoming AMGs.

Quotable: "The lap record on the North Loop has proven to impressive effect that the GLC 63 is right at the top of its segment in terms of vehicle dynamics", said AMG boss Tobias Moers. The six-cylinder GLS 450 produces 362 hp and 369 lb. -ft. of torque. It is paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission which sends power to an AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system.

As with the previous GLS, the new version features a low-range transfer case and locking differentials for demanding off-road adventures, whilst a sophisticated air-suspension enhances high-speed corning stability, whilst also providing high-clearance off-road driving when required.

The eagle-eyed among you may have noticed the new head- and taillights, which get LED surrounds within their lenses and generally adhere to the flashy demands of ultra-potent SUV buyers.

Self-leveling air suspension is standard, while Mercedes's insane E-Active Body Control that debuted with the new GLE is optional. There's a plush interior with seating for six with captain's chairs or seven with the standard bench.

At the disposal of the driver is Mercedes's new MBUX infotainment system with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch central touchscreen with navigation, all standard. The adaptive air-suspension system can offer credible bodyroll mitigation, when threading GLS through tight corners at speed, and then be raised to ensure that it will roll over extremely technical off-road obstacles easily. This suspension setup gets its juice from the 48-volt hybrid system, and it can actually harvest electrical energy from vertical damper motion.

The 2020 GLS doesn't have a price yet, but we expect the crossover on sale in Western Europe in the third quarter of 2019.
