First Alert Weather Day for Wednesday

Risks for severe storms in Oklahoma City will increase after 5 p.m. Wednesday, Thompson said.

"Now is a good time to make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather warnings and make sure WEA (Wireless Emergency Alerts) are turned on", the weather service said in a Thursday morning forecast discussion. This is the area that will be under an ENHANCED risk of severe weather.

It'll be a mild and breezy Wednesday ahead of afternoon severe storms that could produce large hail, high wind and even a stray tornado.

The greatest threat of severe weather will likely develop across the northwestern corner of the ArkLaTex late Wednesday afternoon and evening. "Damaging straight line winds and isolated tornadoes are also possible", the National Weather Service in Tulsa reports.

The threat should diminish throughout the overnight hours as the cold front associated with the potent storms finally pushes off shore.

A massive storm system killed eight people in the South over the weekend and caused damage from Texas to Mississippi.

Forecasters say strong storms are again threatening the South days after dozens of tornadoes plowed through the region.

Cooler air will follow Thursday's storms, making it unusually cool on Friday with clouds and scattered showers expected to linger behind the front. Skies will clear Thursday with winds shifting to the north and a high temperature of 64.
