Louisiana Man Charged With 100 Counts Of First-Degree Rape

A 71-year-old man from Louisiana was charged with 100 counts of first-degree rape over allegations of criminal sexual conduct involving minors, according to a police statement.

Harvey Joseph Fountain, of Pineville, was arrested April 9, eight days after an now-adult accuser told authorities that Fountain raped him or her when the accuser was a child, the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office said.

Fountain was charged with 50 counts of first-degree rape on April 9 and 50 additional counts on April 12.

"Through their investigation, detectives were able to gather evidence that supported the original allegations which lead to sufficient probable cause being established", the office said. Fountain, in turn, was re-arrested and re-booked on the new charges. The assaults allegedly happened in Pineville, Louisiana, to children under 13.

Fountain was being held Tuesday morning in the Rapides Parish Detention Center with bail set at $1 million, the county clerk's office said.

According to Phillips, the decades-old accusations came to light April 1, when one of the victims disclosed the alleged abuse to local authorities and said there may be other victims.

Under Louisiana law, if the complainant is under 13, any type of sexual intercourse constitutes first-degree rape; there is no statute of limitations for the offense in Louisiana. The investigation "is still ongoing, and more arrests are possible", the sheriff's office said in a news release.

Phillips told DailyMail.com: 'Additional victims/witnesses have and will be interviewed but nothing that can be released at this time'.

Lieutenant Stephen Phillips said due to the nature of the case, it will go before a grand jury. It wasn't immediately clear whether Fountain has a lawyer.
