The Model Y will be unveiled today at a live-streamed event scheduled for 8pm Pacific Daylight Time (2pm Australian Eastern Daylight Time) at the company's design studios in Los Angeles. The event will be live streamed.

Tesla will be live streaming the entire launch event live from its website.

Tesla is on the verge of pulling the wraps of its latest electric vehicle: the Model Y. Elon Musk confirmed the reveal date for the vehicle earlier this month following a whirlwind of Tesla stories involving price cuts and next-generation Superchargers. Delivery of this baby SUV to buyers is expected to take a while, though.

The electric automaker has released a grand total of three Model Y teaser images over the past couple of years, two of which showed the SUV from the front and one which offered a front three-quarter view. Elon Musk says its range will be roughly 10 per cent less than equivalent Model 3 variants.

Based on the Model 3 platform, the Model Y is a cheaper, scaled-down version of the Tesla Model X SUV.

Just like the bigger Model X, the new crossover will have a steeply raked rear, meaning it shares more in common with a BMW X4 than a Toyota Kluger.

"Detailed specs & pricing will be provided, as well as test rides in Y". The increased commonality should make the Model Y easier to integrate into current assembly processes and make it somewhat less expensive to produce.

The Model Y is about 10 percent larger than the Model 3.

Tesla is teasing the Model Y with an image of its blacked out silhouette to promote Thursday's reveal.

Tesla will tonight unveil its attempt to break into the fast-growing "crossover" auto segment, revealing the highly anticipated Model Y. Compact SUVs are the largest auto segment and is 50 percent larger than the next-largest segment. This should make production more efficient for Tesla and help keep costs down. Tesla said it hopes to build 2,000 Model Ys per week by September 2020.
