Jussie Smollett’s Family Calls His Attack Domestic Terrorism

Smollett told cops a pair of goons yelling "This is MAGA country" struck him early Tuesday while yelling racist and homophobic slurs, then placed a rope around his neck.

Smollett has not commented on the attack, which Chicago police are investigating as a "possible racially-charged assault and battery" and potential hate crime.

Smollett was treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and was in "good condition", according to People Tuesday.

Smollett is best known for his role as Jamal Lyon, the gay son of Lucious (Terrence Howard) and Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) in Fox's hit show "Empire". He said they are expanding the search to include footage from public buses and buildings beyond the scene's immediate vicinity in the hopes of spotting the men who match Smollett's description of the suspects. The FBI are now investigating this letter and its possible connection to the attack in Chicago. The police did, however, confirm footage of Jussie Smollett inside a Subway sandwich shop, alone, near the location of the reported crime.

"While video does not capture an encounter, detectives are taking this development seriously & wish to question individuals as more cameras are being reviewed", Guglielmi wrote. He was reportedly "shaken and angry" and told CNN he fought back against his attackers.

We also don't know if the persons of interest are at any time seen running or hurrying away from the area, or if they disappear for the same 60 seconds Smollett does.

Chicago police said detectives have been unable to obtain cell phone records to "independently verify" a key part of Smollett's story - that he was talking with his manager by phone at the time he was accosted.

TMZ has also reported that a woman, who lives in Smollett's apartment building, allegedly told police of a man "loitering" outside the building's entrance before the attack.

The actor told police he was on the phone with his manager during the attack, but both of them have refused to turn over their phone records, Guglielmi said.

But police were confident that they would find more videos and photos.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our Empire family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night", a statement from 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment read. "His story has never changed, and we are hopeful they will find these men and bring them to justice".

As two persons of interests are sought, Smollett's family released a joint statement exclusively to theGrio, putting to rest rumors that Smollett wasn't being forthcoming in the investigation.
