Instagram users woke up today to discover that many had lost followers overnight.
Eagle-eyed Insta users noticed that Ariana Grande lost close to 3 million followers, while Selena Gomez lost nearly 2 million.
It was later revealed that Nike and Katy Perry have also been involved in the brutal purge. "Accounts that use these types of apps share their username and password, which is sometimes used to give inauthentic likes, follows and comments to others".
So what happened? Instagram has now tweeted that the follower loss was not the result of a fake user account culling, but instead due to a glitch they are still looking in to.
'We're taking a number of steps to limit this kind of unwelcome behaviour.
'Since the early days of Instagram, we have auto-detected and removed fake accounts to protect our community'.
Instagram is working to resolve an issue that is causing some users to see changes in their follower numbers.
