Red Sonja Put On Back Burner Amid Bryan Singer Controversy

Bryan Singer's Red Sonja shelved amid controversy

The announcement was met with some scrutiny and backlash over the choice of Singer as director for the Red Sonja film due in part to the comic book character's backstory, which includes sexual assault.

Although Millenium Films' Red Sonja adaptation was on the slate past year at the American Film Market, the studio informed the outlet that "the project is not on the slate at the moment and is not for sale at the EFM in Berlin".

Millennium had been planning to shoot "Red Sonja" in Bulgaria this year, but has dropped plans to do so, she also said.

"I continue to be in development for Red Sonja and Bryan Singer continues to be attached", producer Avi Lerner said in a statement to THR at the time. Remarkably, Bohemian Rhapsody grossed $800,000,000 and was nominated for several awards, despite the allegations against Singer. I know the difference between agenda driven fake news and reality, and I am very comfortable with this decision.

Previously, the spokesperson said that people are innocent before proven guilty. One unidentified accuser alleged they had sex with Singer when they were under 18.

It appears as though Millennium Films has finally come to the bold conclusion that having a controversial male director who is plagued with numerous sexual misconduct allegations and lawsuits-not to mention was sacked off his last film for not showing up to work-take the helm of a female-fronted action franchise is, actually, a bad idea. The director, Singer, has repeatedly and consistently denied sexual misconduct and called the story from The Atlantic "a homophobic smear piece". His award nomination for the film was also withdrawn by GLAAD while Time's Up released a statement saying those who hire abusers, "perpetuate a broken system that rewards powerful people and allows them to act without outcome". Fletcher came on board to direct in December after Fox fired Singer from the project after repeated absences from the set had forced the studio to halt production. The title character is a spinoff of Conan the Barbarian and is meant to kick off a new franchise for Millennium, one with a female lead at its center. The 1985 film "Red Sonja" starred Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Lerner defended Singer again in Israeli press in an interview published over the weekend. "I want [the accused] to be judged by the court".

"The project is not on the slate at the moment", the studio, Millennium Films, told Deadline on Monday.
