Symptoms of measles include a fever, red eyes, cough, a runny nose, along with a rash. Most people recover within a week or two.

The law requires the government to provide free immunization to infants and children up to 5 years of age for vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, tuberculosis diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis; poliomyelitis; mumps; Hepatitis-B; and H. Influenza type B (HIB).
"The total number of people infected with the virus in 2018 was the highest this decade: 3 times the total reported in 2017 and 15 times the record low number of people affected in 2016", World Health Organization said. However, those born before 1970 are likely immune.
The B.C. Centre for Disease Control tracks child immunization and reports that 82.1 per cent of children aged seven had been immunized for measles in 2018, compared to 88.4 per cent in 2017 and 90.2 per cent in 2016.
"Progress has been uneven between and within countries, leaving increasing clusters of susceptible individuals unprotected, and resulting in a record number of people affected by the virus in 2018", the report states. In Italy, where the current governing coalition had pledged to drop a law banning children without vaccination from starting pre-school (the coalition has since reversed its position), health officials have declared a 'measles emergency, ' as nearly one quarter of all measles cases in Europe in 2017 were reported in Italy.
