"This Is America" is the first ever hip-hop song to win Song or Record of the Year in the entire history of the awards.

Although Gambino didn't show, we did learn that Mayer and Keys split a Grammy years ago after his "Daughters" beat her out for the award.

He was the first artist to be absent from collecting one of the "big four" Grammys since Amy Winehouse in 2008.

The disturbing "This is America" video took the internet by storm last spring, amassing more than 35 million views on YouTube in just two days.

It looked at the representation of black people in America and the prejudices they faced. The song is also nominated for record of the year.

The Recording Academy has made an effort to diversify its membership amid complaints the Grammys have frequently failed to recognize female and minority artists.

"He walked out and I haven't seen him since", producer Riley Mackin said.

"It's about time that something like this happened with the Grammys".

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that he won the award for Best Music Video for producing Childish Gambino's critically acclaimed visuals for "This is America".
