The President & CEO of FPL, Eric Silagy stated that FPL isn't a conventional electric company, it is more of a technology company that supplies power and has long-believed in making intelligent, forward-thinking infrastructural investments to create long-term tangible benefits for the customers and the state.

PV Magazine estimates the FPL plan calls for deploying about 10 GW, or 1 GW/year of solar capacity, which the publication said would be "unprecedented". When the 30-by-30 plan is completed, FPL expects to be the biggest solar energy operator in the US. The Bloomberg researchers warned that despite a surge in renewable energy investment since 2004, when the world spent less than US$62 billion on cleaner energy, as global energy demand grew, so did the consumption of fossil fuels.

The company said it has secured sites throughout Florida for the projects, some of which could also include battery storage. The company looks forward to working with state & local officials and company regulators to turn the vision into a reality.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis adds, "I am supportive of programs that will provide Floridians with greater access to affordable, clean energy, which will help propel the state to a healthier future".

FPL and its sister company, NextEra Energy Resources, are already the world's largest producer of renewable energy from the wind and sun, according to FPL.

Global spending on solar energy declined by nearly a quarter a year ago to US$130.8 billion, mainly on the back of a regulatory policy overhaul in China that led to an oversupply of solar panels, driving prices down.

"While this is a positive jump in solar development, it's important to note this will not make FPL a leader in solar watts per customer based on their size in the Southeast or the country", Smith said. "This is vital to the economic well-being of our State and quality of life for residents". FPL also plans to continue increasing the fuel efficiency of its natural gas power plants and open the FPL Okeechobee Clean Energy Center - which will run on USA -produced natural gas - in 2022.

FPL has studied solar technology for decades and already operates 18 large solar power plants and hundreds of other universal solar installations across Florida. In 2018, FPL unveiled a solar-plus-storage power plant at Babcock Ranch in Charlotte County. In addition, the company's 2030 Carbon dioxide emissions rate target represents a 67% reduction versus the 2005 US electric industry average.

But the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, a group that has sometimes battled FPL on regulatory issues, took a more-cautious approach to Wednesday's announcement. "It's why our customers enjoy electricity that is among the cleanest and most reliable in the country for a price more than 30 percent below the national average".

"It's why we're reimagining the way we serve our customers and challenging ourselves to find even more innovative ways to do what's best for Florida and the nation".
