Yankees' CC Sabathia dealt positive health update - NY Daily News

CC Sabathia's positive step gives Yankees Sonny Gray leverage

New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia appears to be recovering well from his offseason surgery. Sabathia underwent surgery December 11 to clear a blockage in one artery to his heart.

Sabathia had a scheduled follow-up stress test Tuesday, according to the team, and was cleared to work out. He first experienced symptoms during a workout, and, after contacting the team, he was directed to a heart specialist in NY.

"General manager Brian Cashman said during a conference call Friday that the concern surrounding Sabathia's health had slowed down the Yankees' attempt to trade Sonny Gray". Gray has been on the trade block all winter and Cashman has been very candid about wanting to move him. Sabathia is expected to be New York's No. 5 starter in 2019.

"The CC circumstance certainly has given us pause because we want to make sure we are covered and protected", Cashman said of potentially keeping Gray into spring training or even the regular season.

At the moment the Yankees have Luis Severino, James Paxton, Masahiro Tanaka, and J.A. Happ penciled into the top four spots in their rotation, in whatever order.

With the clearance, Sabathia will be permitted to resume baseball activities.

In 2018, Sabathia tossed 153.0 innings and posted a 9-7 record with a 3.65 ERA and 140 strikeouts.
